Although people have become more open and expressive about mental health issues in recent years, there surely remains so many cases where people don’t speak about their depression or anxiety. Studies by the National Institute of Mental Health revealed that almost 3 in 5 adults who suffer from anxiety will not seek treatment for it, while only 14.3% of people with anxiety problems will receive effective treatment. These figures show that there’s so much more that can be done to help people burdened by anxiety.

Anxiety issues can manifest themselves in several forms, including panic disorder, obsessive compulsive disorder, phobias and post-traumatic stress disorder. If you’re unsure as to whether you suffer from anxiety or you ‘merely’ have everyday worries, ask yourself a few questions. Are you plagued by anxious thoughts every day over a prolonged period? Do you often have flashbacks to unpleasant past experiences? Do you frequently panic, even in seemingly inexplicable situations? Do you constantly question your self-worth?

If you answered yes to most or all of these, it’s very likely that you suffer from an anxiety disorder and it’s essential that you get treatment before the problem evolves into one from which you feel there is no return. The first step is simply to talk to someone you can trust and tell them how you’re feeling. A friendly and supportive reaction to this is bound to make your problems seem far more manageable. Also, embrace the present moment. The future will resolve itself in time, so enjoy now for what it is and do something that makes you feel happy. Learning to love and accept yourself is key in successfully overcoming anxiety.

Here is an infographic from Union Quay Medical Centre in Ireland which has a lot of useful and simplified information on anxiety.
